1. Waar gaat 'Ik geloof dat hij Hans heette' over?
In het kort: In Erwitte, Duitsland, wordt op 13 juli 1932 een eerste kindje geboren in het gezin van Walter en Lenie Eichenwald. Het jongetje is gezond en krijgt er later een broertje bij. Het is een Joods gezin en na de Kristallnacht op 9 november 1938 worden de problemen voor het gezin steeds groter door alle maatregelen van Hitler. De ouders besluiten Horst naar een tante en oom te zenden in Arnhem. Horst komt daar niet aan en via veel omzwervingen belandt hij bij het Joodse gezin van Salomon en Kaatje Mozes met hun twee dochters in Tilburg. Ondertussen is ook in Nederland de bezetting door de nazi’s begonnen, maar gelukkig is het gezin Mozes “Gesperrt”. Desondanks wordt ook Tilburg “Judenrein” gemaakt en belanden zij in Kamp Vught. Wat zich daar verder afspeelt en ook later, als Martha bij de Philipsgroep mag werken is voor mij te bizar voor woorden. Uiteindelijk wordt Martha bevrijd en heeft zij mij later haar verhaal kunnen vertellen. Het is voor een groot deel haar verhaal, echter mede door mij samengesteld aan de hand van haar goed bewaarde documenten. De waarheid is vooral haar waarheid en ook de teruggevonden documenten spraken voor zich. Een aantal hiervan heb ik letterlijk overgenomen met de schrijfwijze van 70 jaar geleden.
2. Is dit het eerste boek waaraan u werkte?
In 1995 en in 1999 heb ik in eigen beheer twee boeken uitgegeven voor een select publiek. Een fotoboek en verhalenboek van oud-wijkbewoners van de Paasberg in Arnhem. Beide boeken met een oplage van 1000 stuks. Ook daar was veel onderzoek voor nodig.
3. Aanleiding voor het boek was het gesprek met Martha. Hoe leerde u haar kennen?
In de jaren dat ik als therapeut werkte in Nijmegen, werd mevrouw Martha Mozes door haar huisarts naar mij verwezen. Op een dag bracht zij een foto mee met daarop zijzelf, haar zusje Roosje en een voor haar onbekend jongetje. Vooral dat jongetje ging mij bezig houden. Steeds zag ik zijn gezicht voor mij. Na het overlijden van Martha in 1997 heeft haar man mij gevraagd over haar en haar familie te schrijven. Hij wist zelf heel weinig van haar verleden, want praten daarover was taboe. In 1999 ben ik begonnen met enige verkenningen, maar door persoonlijke omstandigheden heb ik het onderzoek een aantal jaren laten rusten. Ik werd ernstig ziek en mijn huwelijk strandde een tijd later. Toen ik hertrouwde in 2009, met Pom, moedigde zij mij aan het onderzoek weer op te pakken.
4. In uw boek volgt u een Joods vluchtelingetje en zijn pleegfamilie. Ziet u het als een noodzaak dat zoveel mogelijk mensen hun verhaal leren kennen?
Jazeker! Het verhaal sluit aan bij een educatief project in het Nationaal Museum Kamp Vught. Dit project richt zich op de jongeren en mede daarom heb ik gekozen voor een begrijpelijk taalgebruik over een onbegrijpelijke geschiedenis. Maar ook de ouderen zijn mijn leespubliek.
5. Heeft u zich altijd al veel met het oorlogsverleden bezig gehouden?
Mijn vader was net na de Tweede Wereldoorlog medeoprichter van het Airborne Comité in Arnhem en Oosterbeek. Bij ons thuis werd elk jaar vergaderd met de organisatoren uit Engeland over het onderbrengen van de familieleden en oud-strijders, welke betrokken waren bij de Slag om Arnhem. Er waren daardoor contacten met o.a. Gen. Urquhart, John Frost, etc. Mijn oudste broer en ik vonden dat in onze jeugd niet erg interessant, sterker nog: we hadden er een hekel aan, want dat betekende elk jaar weer verplicht enveloppen plakken tussen sigaren rokende mannen, etc. Nee, de oorlog had voor mij niet die belangstelling. Mijn twee zoons echter hebben uit eigen beweging wel die belangstelling ontwikkeld. Onbegrijpelijk, maar toch. Door hun belangstelling werd ik als pa steeds vaker betrokken bij al hun activiteiten. Het museum “Bergen en Behouden” bij de vliegbasis Deelen is mede door hun toedoen ontstaan.
Met betrekking tot het boek heb ik zoveel mogelijk onderzoek gedaan en heb veel plekken bezocht, waar - vooral in Nederland - het verhaal zich afspeelt. De concentratiekampen in Duitsland en Polen staan nog op mijn wensenlijst.
Een plek die indruk maakte is het huis, waar de familie Mozes woonde in Tilburg. Ik ben een halve dag binnen geweest. Ik was op de kamer van de kinderen van toen en heb gezocht naar overgebleven kleine details welke ik met de foto’s van toen terugvond. Ook Erwitte in Duitsland waar Horst Eichenwald werd geboren geeft mij een heel speciaal gevoel. Als ik daar ben en mijn ogen sluit, hoor en zie ik alles gebeuren. Maar ook Kamp Vught, Eindhoven, Bergen aan Zee... maken indruk. Zelfs in Arnhem als ik door de Emmastraat loop, zie ik de beelden voor me. Ik lees ook boeken welke over deze periode verhalen, maar de documenten bieden veel boeiender en indrukwekkender details. Kijk, hier voor mij ligt een film van Dick Laan, in 1939 door hem als documentaire opgenomen in Het Zeehuis in Bergen aan Zee. Als ik naar deze film kijk, zie ik personeel en zalen waar ook Horst mee te maken kreeg in 1939. Dat maakt op mij heel veel indruk.
6. U houdt een website bij. Hoe lang bestaat de site al, wat is het doel van de site?
Ik heb een flink aantal websites in beheer als webmaster. De website over Horst Eichenwald heb ik in 2002 op het www geplaatst. www.horsteichenwald.nl
De website heb ik geplaatst in de hoop dat belangstellenden mij met materiaal zouden ondersteunen over die periode. Ook was het voor mij een manier om het verhaal deels te kunnen vertellen, wanneer voor mij een boek te hoog gegrepen zou worden. In de afgelopen jaar heb ik heel veel reacties gekregen uit binnen- en buitenland.
7. Doordat u zich zo verdiept heeft in de historie van een specifiek gezin kan het zijn dat u zich verbonden met ze voelt. Is dat zo? Is het moeilijk het verhaal los te laten?
Die verbondenheid is vaak emotioneel, omdat er steeds opnieuw gebeurtenissen zijn, waardoor ik er niet van los wil komen. Bijvoorbeeld Roosje, het pleegzusje van Horst uit Tilburg, ik voel me betrokken bij haar. Elk jaar word ik uitgenodigd voor een bijeenkomst in Vught van de kinderen van toen, die bij haar in de klas zaten. Wil ik niet missen. Dan wordt er weer een studieplan gepresenteerd in Kamp Vught waar Martha, Roosje en Horst een rol in spelen. Het houdt niet op en dat is goed. Ik hoop het verhaal nog lang te herbeleven, heel lang! Ik wens dat het nooit meer zal gebeuren, daarom moet ook dit verhaal verteld worden. Horst wordt dit jaar in juli 79 jaar staat op mijn verjaardagkalender.
8. Volgen uw zonen en dochter ook uw boek in wording? Discussieert u met ze, of met uw vrouw of vrienden?
De kinderen weten dat hun pa bezig is met een verhaal over één of ander Joods jongetje, maar ik denk niet veel meer dan dat. Af en toe vertel ik hen over mijn onderzoek, maar het zijn ook mensen van deze tijd met vaak heel eigen belangstellingen. Met mijn vrouw en mijn broer Hans kan ik veel van gedachte wisselen. Mijn broer is neerlandicus en heeft veel teksten helpen stroomlijnen.
9. Wie krijgt het boek het eerst te zien, als het straks af is?
Naast mijn vrouw krijgen Martha, Roosje en Horst als eersten het boek te zien. Het is hun verhaal, ook al gebruiken zij mij om het door te geven. Het werd tijd dat zij hun verhaal vertellen, elke dag opnieuw.
De burgemeester van Erwitte mag van mij als een van de eersten het verhaal ontvangen. Hij heeft nog steeds niet gezorgd dat een toegezegde gedenktafel is geplaatst in Erwitte. De bevolking ontkent nog steeds uit schaamte alle gebeurtenissen, op enkele mensen na. Verder krijgen mijn kinderen het boek, omdat zij het verhaal nu nog niet kennen.
10. Bent u een perfectionist? Al in de eerste redactieronde zijn weinig grammaticale of spelfouten te ontdekken. Hoe vaak herschrijft u uw werk?
Ja, ik ben een perfectionist, maar geen perfecte gelukkig. Anders had mijn karakter nooit toegelaten een boek te schrijven. Wel ben ik vaak heel gedreven en toch ook lui. Meestal een mens van uitersten. Bang voor geweld, maar wel zeven jaar Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Een huismus, maar wel een jaartje Nederlands Nieuw Guinea. Hou niet van vuile handen, maar als amateur archeoloog vaak in de bagger gewroet. Graag rust zoeken in de natuur, maar ook bungelen in een mandje onder een helikopter boven een woeste zee op het continentaal plat en neergelaten worden op een stampend booreiland tussen ruig mannenvolk. Een leven vol tegenstellingen. Eigenlijk heb ik een hekel aan schrijven, maar moet wel. Er komen te veel verhalen mijn hoofd binnen maar zal nooit de rust vinden die verhalen allemaal op te schrijven. Daarom probeer ik zo weinig mogelijk te herschrijven. Het moet er staan, dan pas kan ik verder. Ik herschrijf de regels wel in mijn hoofd voor het aan het ongeduldige papier wordt toevertrouwd.
11. U zegt dat u het onderzoek naar Horst en zijn familie nooit zult kunnen staken, u ontdekt steeds weer nieuwe dingen. Uw boek zal eigenlijk steeds bij elke nieuwe druk aangevuld moeten worden dus? Of is uw website dan de oplossing?
Vanaf nu komt nieuwe informatie in de eerste plaats in het boek, maar het verhaal staat en daar valt weinig aan toe te voegen. Er zijn een aantal gebeurtenissen, welke ik niet in het boek mocht opnemen uit piëteit naar de uitgemoorde families vond een joodse commissie. Zo kreeg ik bijvoorbeeld een uitspraak van Horst in handen via een externe bron, genoteerd in een rapport uit 1940 en gedaan in Eindhoven. Mij werd verzocht deze uitspraak achterwege te laten. Dat deed mij pijn, want het was de enige geregistreerde uitspraak van de kleine man. Meer kan en wil ik hier niet over zeggen.
12. U beschikt over veel fotomateriaal. Het is bijzonder dat u zo veel vond...
Herbert van Blijderveen, de man van Martha overleed in 2000 en ik erfde de fotoalbums, poëziealbums, documenten, ansichtkaarten verzamelingen, kampbrieven uit Vught, etc., de viool van Roosje en de mandoline van Martha. Ook deze waardevolle stukken konden door mij goed worden gebruikt voor het verhaal. Alle stukken zijn ondergebracht in Kamp Vught.
13. Tijdens uw speurtocht ontmoette u veel mensen die u hielpen. Vindt u dat ook fijn aan onderzoek doen? Dat u nieuwe mensen met nieuwe inzichten ontmoet?
Als het doelgericht is, ga ik graag met mensen om, maar ga bijna nooit de strijd met anderen aan. Eigenlijk ben ik een “Einzelgänger”, altijd actief en niet gehinderd door de mening van anderen. Meer het type van: leven op een onbewoond eiland. Wat had ik graag in plaats van Godfried Bomans naar de Rottumerplaat gegaan, maar dan minimaal een jaar of langer (maar dan wel met Pom!). Ik denk dat ik zelfs daar veel aan onderzoek kan doen. Voor mij is de wereld meestal een speeltuin vol verrassingen. Ieder mens is een levend geschiedenisboek van zijn of haar eigen leven. Mijn leven is nog niet geschreven, dus werk genoeg. Het doen van onderzoek is mijn lust en mijn leven. Ja, ik sta open voor nieuwe inzichten. Meestal is er elke dag weer iets nieuws te ontdekken.
14. Denkt u dat uw therapeutachtergrond u helpt bij het schrijven? Kunt u zich hierdoor goed inleven in personage en lezer?
Door mijn werk voorheen als ontwerper van technische installaties heb ik geleerd creatief en ruimtelijk te denken. In mijn werk later als therapeut is dat ook heel nuttig gebleken. Vaak heeft het mij geholpen een stuk problematiek van de ander in een ruimtelijk kader te plaatsen en van daaruit te werken aan veranderingen waar nodig of gewenst. Het is geen helderziendheid of paranormale “gave”. Eerder juist gebaseerd op logica en realiteit. Dat is ook de basis van mijn schrijverij. Daar waar nodig is, gebruik ik mijn fantasie voortkomend uit de prikkels van de realiteit. Het inleven in personages, de empathie voor hen waar ik over schrijf komt eigenlijk vanzelf, echter niet altijd direct rekening houdend met de lezer. Op grond daarvan zal ik meestal wel de tekst willen kuisen.
15. Gaat u na dit boek verder met een volgend boek of onderzoek? Waar denkt u aan?
Dat is al begonnen, maar dat hoort u nog wel.
16. Wat deed u toen u nadat u het eerste gesprek bij de uitgeverij had? En wat gaat u doen als het boek op de mat valt straks?
Wat ik deed na het eerste gesprek? Ik heb “Joepie!” geroepen op de stoep van de uitgever en een paar foto’s gemaakt van de omgeving. Daarna hebben Pom en ik een mooie rit gemaakt door de sneeuw bij Baraque Michel en zijn door gereden naar Monschau. Daar hebben wij lekker gegeten als voorschot op het boek. Kosten: 28,- Euro en lekker!
Wat ik ga doen als het boek op de mat valt? Eerst met Martha, Roosje en Horst praten. Daarna ook de anderen bellen en heel trots lopen wezen. Ik zal erg baldadig worden, dus moet ik me beheersen.
17. Bent u een voorstander van 'microgeschiedenis' (inzoomen op 1 gebeurtenis, gebruik maken van egodocumenten)? Zou het ook mogelijk zijn dat u over uw stad Arnhem zou gaan schrijven? Of over Indonesië? Waar uw vrouw vandaan komt?
U lijkt wel helderziend! Maar ik zei al tegen u dat ik over een Arnhemse wijk twee boeken heb gemaakt. Een boek over mijn vrouw en haar familie en een boek over een Arnhems jochie zijn mijn nieuwe plannen. Terwijl ik dit vertel, krijg ik bericht dat mijn zoon Eric ergens in de woestijn tussen Egypte ben Libië staat. Hij moet nog 1500 km door de woestijn ploegen en kwam vandaag langs El Alamein. Hij twitterde dat hij zijn portemonnee kwijt is. Kijk, dat is maar een heel klein stukje van zijn geschiedenis als cameraman (van de NOS, red.). Werk, dat hij al 20 jaar doet in alle uithoeken van onze aardbol. Afgelopen weekend vroeg ik hem tijdens een etentje in Bussum wanneer hij dacht te gaan stoppen. Hij vindt dat hij nog lang genoeg dood kan zijn, dus waarom stoppen? Och, ’t is maar een vraag, zei ik, maar vaders moeten zulke vragen ook niet stellen aan zulke zoons. Echter, twintig jaar geschiedenis schrijven over je eigen zoon is geen geringe opgave. Niet over deze zoon.
18. U gebruikt een Indonesisch citaat in uw boek. Van wie is dat citaat en waarom heeft u het gekozen?
Het lijkt een citaat, maar de strekking is fantasie. De aandachtige lezer zal na echt alles gelezen te hebben begrijpen waar het over gaat. Maar lees het boek eerst. Het is zoiets als: moppen moet je ook niet gaan uitleggen. Alleen is dit geen mop. De gedachte hierachter gaat wat dieper.
19. Het verlies van huisdieren komt steeds weer terug in het boek. Hoe komt dat?
Ik was net vijf jaar. In de septemberdagen van 1944 werd Arnhem door de moffen ontruimd. De bekende Slag om Arnhem was begonnen. Iedereen ontvluchtte de stad, naar men toen zei voor slechts drie dagen. Het werden negen maanden van angst, ondervoeding en veel ontberingen. We vluchtten van boerderij naar boerderij en kwamen na maanden in Putten op de Veluwe terecht. Ik heb vaak gehuild als kind, dat ik mijn speelgoedhondje thuis was vergeten. Na thuiskomst was ons hele huis leeggeroofd en heb ik dagen met mijn broertje gezocht tussen alle puin en afval op straat. Mijn kleine oorlogstrauma. Dit mocht Horst niet gebeuren.
20. Hoe ziet een schrijfdag er voor u uit?
Als ik schrijf, doe ik dat nu voor het beeldscherm van de pc in mijn huiskamer. Niet op Rottumerplaat, helaas. In gedachte praat ik met de personages van mijn schrijfwerk en luister naar oude jazz, keroncong of klassieke muziek, maar niet te zwaar, niet te hard. Als suikerpatiënt drink meestal water of thee en ’s morgens een bak koffie. Als je net als ik in een wonderwereld leeft van avontuur en indrukken is concentratie een probleem. Daarom werk ik graag ’s nachts tussen 23:00 en 03:00h.
21. Is het niet moeilijk om bij een bestaand verhaal ook fantasie te gebruiken?
Ik worstelde wel met de hoeveelheid aan fantasieën. Als die ook beschreven zouden worden, zou het boek te groot zijn geworden. Mijn wens is dat het lezende publiek nog genoeg ruimte wordt geboden de eigen fantasie te gebruiken.
22. Wie is uw grootste voorbeeld als schrijver/onderzoeker?
Dan kies ik voor een Amerikaanse psychiater, Milton Erickson. Overleden 25 maart 1980. Lees hem dan weet je waarom.
23. Wat hoopt u met dit boek te bereiken?
Als ik een gesprek met Hitler zou hebben weet ik niet of er iets bereikt wordt, wanneer ik hem kon vragen dit boek te lezen. Het enige wat ik daarmee zou bereiken is een groot gevoel van verbijstering in mij.
Maar mijn grote wens is dat Martha, Roosje en Horst en alle andere Martha’s, Roosjes en Horstjes meehelpen te voorkomen, dat het ooit weer gebeurt. Helaas zal het bij een wens blijven tot nu toe.
Ik hoop dat schrijven over dit onderwerp toch nog steeds - druppeltje voor druppeltje - helpt naar meer respect voor elkaar. Oorlog of vrede is een keuze die binnen een gezin wordt gemaakt. Dit boek sluit dus aan bij een lopend educatief project in Kamp Vught over kinderen in de klas van Roosje. Ik hoop dat ook door het lezen van het verhaal van Martha, Roosje en Horst nog meer mensen het kamp bezoeken. Op 6 juni 2011 wordt een expositie geopend in Kamp Vught over de kindertransporten van Vught naar Sobibor. Op 6 en 7 juni 1943 werden rond de 1296 kinderen weggevoerd, waarbij ook Roosje en Horst.
24. Wilt u zelf nog wat kwijt?
Mijn eerste ervaringen als beginnend schrijver zijn heel speciaal en zal ik koesteren. Het mogen voor mij ervaringen zijn die mij inspireren bij volgende “projecten”.
